Falling food costs trim Egypt’s annual inflation to 12.7%

Falling food prices held Egypt’s monthly inflation steady in August and trimmed the annual rate to 12.7% from 13.0% in July, the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) reported on Thursday.

The food and beverage basket registered an overall monthly decline of 1.2%. The contraction followed a 1.5% drop in meat and poultry prices compared to July, alongside a 7% decrease in vegetable costs over the same period, according to CAPMAS.

Sluggish consumer demand for poultry and table eggs blunted potential price hikes in those categories, despite rising animal feed costs throughout the month.

However, price pressures persisted across essential household utilities. The housing, water, electricity, and gas index climbed 1.9% month-on-month, marking a 33% surge compared to August 2025.

Upward pressure on living costs may intensify in September, as authorities prepare to enforce the first 15% annual increase on revised rental values for properties regulated under the Old Rent Law.
